Art Can Be A Distraction

When you’re feeling down, out of sorts, unwell, or even if you’re in pain, trying to focus on anything important seems impossible. In fact, the issues you are facing can seem much worse than they really are, because they are all you can think about and concentrate on. Pain, both mental and physical, has a way of superseding everything else.

One way to ensure that this doesn’t happen is to surround yourself with art. Whether you created it yourself or someone else did it, enjoying art will help take the focus off your pain; you’ll be able to look at the art and think about it instead. There are so many different facets in every piece of art that even a quick glance can’t help but get you thinking about it, and the pain will be reduced.

Stress Reduction

When you are stressed, your body releases much more cortisol than usual. This hormone, nicknamed the stress hormone, can have an adverse effect on your mood, your thoughts, and even your physical health since it can damage the heart and circulation, for example. When you can reduce your stress in any way, the production of cortisol will decrease. When you’re having a lot of fun, you’ll produce serotonin, which reduces cortisol even more.

Simply looking at art can increase serotonin levels and reduce your stress, and it doesn’t matter where the art came from or what media it might be in, or what the subject matter is. What’s even better for stress reduction is creating art yourself. Not only will you be distracted from your pain since you’re concentrating on your creation, but you will also be producing plenty of serotonin. In the end, you’ll feel wonderful.

You Can Do It

Art is incredibly accessible. The amazing thing about art is that you don’t have to have any kind of skill or talent to take part and enjoy yourself. Unlike sports or other activities that require some sort of expertise before you can join in, art is open to everyone. Even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life or you have never attempted to take a photograph with artistic merit, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy trying. You might even discover that you are good at whatever type of art you’ve chosen to enjoy.

If you love to create art, create art. Even if you’re the only person who ever sees the results, the physical and mental health benefits will be incredible.
